July 2018 Playlist
I'm starting off this month's playlist with something a little different – A lo-fi hip hop track by (what looks like) a London based musician, Joeshort. This track is smooth as hell and begs to be listened to on repeat while shredding the slopes during these colder months. Drift away with the melodic formation of samples in this track along with its delightfully chilled beat.
Next, we have Tilman, a music producer and DJ from Germany. This track caught me by surprise. From the beginning, I thought this track was going to be a distorted, raw and nostalgic track, but as it progressed, Tilman morphed the music into this brilliantly layered house track. Loving the array of samples glued together with a deep bass line and intricate drum machine sounds.
I couldn't find much on this next artist, Wallabee. The musician has released this track 'Breathe' on Dream Raw Recordings, and for me, the track is exactly that - Dreamy, raw and drenched in nostalgia. The woman's distant radio style voice gives the track distance and the crunchy distorted drums adds tremendous texture, almost tangible. I love when a piece can offer you something sombre but also uplifting.
Akasha System, a USA (Portland, OR) based DJ and producer, has created a real deep house track here with a side of smooth seaside ambience. For me, this piece is a multi-purpose score that can be enjoyed laying on the beach, thinking about how vast and incomprehensible the universe is, or getting your groove on in some basement club that you don't remember the name of.
I'm finishing this month's playlist off with what I would call a close to perfect use of minimalism in a musical piece. Rocco, a French producer and DJ has been killing it for over 20 years and this track is no exception. Such a disciplined use of restraint in producing this number. And the wise words during the start of this track only add to its precision. Until next month, keep those hamstrings warm.
